Bluebuck, Hippotragus leucophaeus. The third drawing made while the animals still lived was by Allamand in 1778. This drawing was made of the animal that has come to define blue antelopes world wide – the ‘type’ specimen in Leiden, the Netherlands. Indeed, the degree to which it closely resembles its model is striking (see Husson and Holthuis, 1969, Plates 2 and 3). Variants of this drawing were published by Buffon (1782), Schreber (1785) and Shaw (1801). Presumably this drawing was made from the mounted specimen. Had Klockner, the taxidermist, and Allamand, the artist-naturalist, seen living animals?
