Opis:
2nd Century, Roman, copper alloy, cast, damaged, plate brooch of mandorla form, once with six peripheral knobs. Length 36mm, Width 16.2mm, Thickness 9.6mm, Weight 4.0g. This hinged brooch has an oval raised turret/centre in steps, which have multiple, oblique radiating line decoration. This decoration also continues around the outer border of the brooch. There are two scrolls of red, white & blue enamel, damaged but of well preserved colours. The three remaining periferal discoidal lugs have a concentric circle punched decoration which also appears six times in the field - three at each end. The pin is missing but both hinge and catch plate remain. There is a distinctive, circular domed recess under the oval turret on the back of this brooch. There is a pale brown patina but orange brown rusty deposit/stain from the water logged ground. Ref. Iron Age & Roman brooches, R.
