Roy Lichtenstein was in the forefront of the Pop Art movement. Prior to the 1960s, popular culture and mass media were not considered "worthy" of being depicted in art. Pop Art rejected this constraint.

Lichtenstein pioneered the use of Benday dots -- a cheap image-producing process used by newspapers and comic books -- in art. In 1965, he began a series of paintings titled "Brushstroke", in which he parodied the wild brush techniques of Abstract Expressionism (an art movement of the 1950s). Lichtenstein used a mechanical process to apply oil and acrylic to this canvas, ironically depicting a brush stroke without using a brush stroke.
