Żeneta^[9] (Genetta) – rodzaj ssaka z podrodziny Genettinae w obrębie rodziny wiwerowatych (Viverridae).

Zasięg występowania

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Afryce i Europie^[10]^[11]^[12].

Morfologia

Długość ciała 40,8–62,2 cm, ogona 34–53,5 cm; masa ciała 1,3–3,5 kg; samce są z reguły większe i cięższe od samic^[11].

Systematyka

Etymologia

Genetta: starofr. genette „żeneta”^[13].
Odmaelurus: gr. οσμη osmē lub οδμη odmē „zapach”; αιλουρος ailouros „kot”^[14]. Gatunek typowy: Viverra genetta Linnaeus, 1758.
Osbornictis: Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857–1935), amerykańsoki geolog, paleontolog; gr. ικτις iktis, ικτιδις iktidis „łasica”^[15]. Gatunek typowy: Osbornictis piscivora J.A. Allen, 1919.
Pseudogenetta: gr. ψευδος pseudos „fałszywy”^[16]; rodzaj Genetta G. Cuvier, 1816. Gatunek typowy: Pseudogenetta villiersi Dekeyser, 1949 (= Genetta thierryi Matschie, 1902).
Paragenetta: gr. παρα para „blisko, przy”^[17]; rodzaj Genetta G. Cuvier, 1816. Gatunek typowy: Genetta (Paragenetta) lehmanni Kuhn, 1960 (= Genetta johnstoni Pocock, 1908).
