Kafroun or Al-Kafroun (Arabic الكفرون) is a Greek Orthodox Christian Syrian town in the Tartous Governorate. It is situated about 40 miles from the major city of Hims in the An-Nusayriyah Mountains range at 550 metres above sea level, making it a summer resort for locals who want to escape the hot summer temperatures in the lowlands. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), al-Kafrun had a population of 485 in the 2004 census.[1]
It is famous for the annual festival in celebration of the ascension of Mary on August 15th, held atop the mountain, Jabal Al-Saideh.
Kafroun is the birthplace of the famous Syrian singer George Wassouf.
