Miasto założone 4 kwietnia 1838, nazwa pochodzi od Johna Beckleya. W 2007 było 16 830 mieszkańców (8 pozycja spośród miast stanu Wirginia Zachodnia), obszar metropolitalny 77 000 mieszkańców (2007). Znajdują się dwa uniwersytety "Mountain State University" i "Concord University". Przez Beckley przebiegają autostrady: I64 i I77.
