Chaque site de barrage écluse sur le Cher canalisé est constitué d'un barrage mobile, d'un déversoir fixe pour l'écoulement des eaux surabondantes (de 20 à 45 m de long) , d'une écluse en maçonnerie, d'une maison éclusière comprenant deux logements (éclusier et barragiste) et d'annexes diverses (magasins à aiguilles notamment).
Le Cher canalisé est un prolongement du canal du Berry. Il conduit de Noyers sur Cher à Saint-Avertin.
