Waga kogucia mężczyzn to jedna z dwunastu męskich konkurencji bokserskich rozgrywanych podczas letnich igrzysk olimpijskich w 1988 w Seulu. Startowali bokserzy o wadze nie przekraczającej 54 kilogramów. Pojedynki w tej kategorii wagowej toczone były w dniach od 17 września do 1 października w hali Jamsil Students' Gymnasium. Zwyciężył reprezentant Stanów Zjednoczonych Kennedy McKinney. Wystąpiło 48 bokserów z 48 państw.
Podczas pojedynku pomiędzy Aleksandyrem Christowem z Bułgarii a Byunem Jung-ilem z Korei Południowej doszło do niecodziennego zdarzenia. Walka była wyrównana, a o zwycięstwie Christowa zadecydowały dwa punkty odjęte Byunowi przez sędziego za uderzenia głową. Po ogłoszeniu punktowego zwycięstwa Christowa koreański sekundant wbiegł na ring i uderzył sędziego ringowego. Inni Koreańczycy również zaatakowali sędziego, który musiał być chroniony przez innych funkcjonariuszy do przybycia ochrony. Niektórzy pracownicy ochrony również próbowali uderzyć sędziego. Byun odmówił zejścia z ringu i przebywał na nim przez 67 minut, aż wygaszono światła. W następstwie tych zajść przewodniczący koreańskiego Komitetu Olimpijskiego podał się do dymisji, a kilku funkcjonariuszy otrzymało zakaz pełnienia funkcji[1].
