Branta – rodzaj ptaka z podrodziny gęsi (Anserinae) w rodzinie kaczkowatych (Anatidae).

Zasięg występowania

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Ameryce Północnej, Eurazji oraz na Hawajach[13].

Morfologia

Długość ciała 55–110 cm, rozpiętość skrzydeł 110–183 cm; masa ciała 850–6523 g (samce są większe i cięższe od samic)[14].

Systematyka

Etymologia

  • Branta: nazwa rodzajowa pochodzi od słowa branta i brendina oznaczającego w średniowiecznej łacinie „berniklę”. Łacińska nazwa pochodzi od słowa Brandgás oznaczającego w języku staronordyjskim „opaloną (czarną) gęś”. Nazwa ta została skrócona i zlatynizowana w obecnej formie przez Turnera w 1544 roku. Nie ma żadnego związku z greckim słowem βρενθος brenthos oznaczającym „niezidentyfikowanego ptaka wodnego”[15].
  • Bernicla (Bernicula): epitet gatunkowy Anas bernicla Linnaeus, 1758; średniowiecznołac. bernicla „bernikla białolica”[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anas bernicla Linnaeus, 1758.
  • Leucopareia: gr. λευκοπαρειος leukopareios „białe policzki, jasne policzki”, od λευκος leukos „biały”; παρηιον parēion „policzek”[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anas leucopsis Bechstein, 1803.
  • Rufibrenta: łac. rufus „rudy”; brenthos „nieznany ptak wodny”, od gr. βρενθος brenthos „niezidentyfikowany ptak wodny”[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anser ruficollis Pallas, 1769.
  • Leucoblepharon: gr. λευκος leukos „biały”; βλεφαρον blepharon „powieka”[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anas canadensis Linnaeus, 1758
  • Brenthus: gr. βρενθος brenthos „niezidentyfikowany ptak wodny” (por. łac. brenthos „nieznany ptak wodny” (inny ptak o tej samej nazwie ale zamieszkujący lasy, identyfikowany jest jako drozd))[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anas bernicla Linnaeus, 1758.
  • Ptocas: gr. πτωκας ptōkas „bojaźliwy, ptaki”[15]. Nowa nazwa dla Rufibrenta.
  • Nesochen: gr. νησος nēsos „wyspa” (tj. Hawaje); χην khēn, χηνος khēnos „gęś”[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anser sandvicensis Vigors, 1834.
  • Eubranta: gr. ευ eu „ładny”; rodzaj Branta Scopoli, 1769[15]. Gatunek typowy: Anas leucopsis Bechstein, 1803.
