W 1955 roku do sprzedaży w Ameryce Północnej trafiła seria modelowa dużych, luksusowych samochodów opracowanych w ramach koncernu Chrysler. W ten sposób powstał duży sedan o nazwie Royal, na którym oparto także bliźniacze konstrukcje[1]. W zależności od poziomu wyposażenia, poszczególne modele Dodge'a oparte na modelu Royal odróżniały się malowaniem nadwozia, a także kolorem, wersją nadwozia i nazwą. Dwa z nich utworzyły potem dwie, niezależne linie modelowe - Custom Royal i Coronet[2].

In 1928, Chrysler acquired Fargo Trucks and Dodge Brothers and also established Plymouth and DeSoto brands. Plymouth was Chryslers lowest priced car, Dodge was next, then Desoto and Chrysler was top of the line. For 1955 the Wayfarer and Meadowlark were dropped, the Coronet, introduced in 1949, was now the base level Dodge (available in 2 and 4 door Sedan and Coronet Lancer 2 door Hardtop, the base wagon was the 2 and 4 door Suburban) Mid spec was the Royal (available in 4 door Sedan and Lancer 2 door Hardtop, mid spec wagon, the 4 door Sierra) Top model was the Custom Royal. (4 door Sedan and Lancer 2 door Hardtop and Convertible). Upmarket Wagons were the Sierra Royal. The La Femme was a special package for women, they came in Heather Rose and Sapphire White and floral tapestry-like fabrics. 1955 and 1956 models were nearly identical, but a more pronounced fin at the back on the 56

Engines; 230 cu in 6 or 270 cu in Red Ram V8, (all Royals and Custom Royals were V8s) the sporty 1956 D500 model got the 315 cu in V8, upgraded suspension and brakes.
