Flaga stanowa Kalifornii - Wzór tej flagi oparto na fladze podniesionej w mieście Sonoma 14 czerwca 1846 przez grupę Amerykanów, którzy po wyparciu wojsk meksykańskich proklamowali niepodległą Republikę Kalifornii. Nazywana jest potocznie flagą niedźwiedzia grizzly, ponieważ ten podgatunek niedźwiedzi występował właśnie w tym rejonie (już nie występuje: ostatni osobnik kalifornijskiego podgatunku został zabity w sierpniu 1922 r. w hrabstwie Tulare). Uznano, że bardzo silne i niebezpieczne zwierzę będzie dobrym symbolem stanu. Czerwona gwiazda symbolizuje niezależność.

- According to a newspaper article of 1878, one of the Bear Flags may have been designed by William L. Todd, a nephew of Mary Todd Lincoln.
- An 1890 photograph of the original flag. It and the accompanying Storm Flag (bear flag by Peter Storm), were destroyed on April 18, 1906, in the fires that followed the great San Francisco Earthquake.
