Frank Murphy (ur. 13 kwietnia 1890 w Harbor Beach, zm. 19 lipca 1949 w Detroit) – amerykański polityk.
Życiorys
Urodził się 13 kwietnia 1890 w Harbor Beach[1]. Studiował nauki prawne na University of Michigan i został przyjęty do palestry[2]. Służył w United States Army w czasie I wojny światowej i dosłużył się stopnia podpułkownika[1]. Tuż po wojnie był zastępcą prokuratora okręgowego w Michigan, a także wykładał prawo w University of Detroit[1]. W latach 1930–1933 pełnił funkcję burmistrza Detroit, a w okresie 1933–1935 – gubernatorem generalnym Filipin[2]. W 1936 roku został wybrany gubernatorem Michigan (z ramienia Partii Demokratycznej) i funkcję tę pełnił przez dwuletnią kadencję[1]. Na początku 1939 roku Franklin Delano Roosevelt zaproponował objęcie stanowiska prokuratora generalnego[2]. Rolę tę pełnił przez rok, kiedy to został mianowany sędzią Sądu Najwyższego[2]. Członkiem najwyższego organu judykatywy pozostał do śmierci, która nastąpiła 19 lipca 1949 roku w Detroit[1].

The origins of the seal are unknown; it was first used in the 19th century as the seal for the Office of the Attorney General (prior to the formation of the Department of Justice) but the exact date is unknown. Even the translation of the Latin motto is murky, a matter of debate between Latin scholars. The Department's currently accepted translation is who prosecutes on behalf of Lady Justice, referring to the Attorney General. The motto is an allusion to the wording of the writ in a qui tam action: qui tam pro domino rege quam pro se ipso sequitur ("he who sues on behalf of our lord the King as well as for himself." The current-day seal dates from 1934, when some (though not all) of the heraldic mistakes on the original were corrected. More information here.
