Nazwa miasta pochodzi od lokalnych wodospadów na rzece Missisipi, które kończyły trasę podróży parowców pod koniec XIX wieku. Obecnie wodospady zakryte są przez zaporę wodną Blandin Paper Mill.
W Grand Rapids urodziła się i spędziła pierwsze lata życia aktorka i piosenkarka Judy Garland.
