Harvey James Alter (ur. 12 września 1935 w Nowym Jorku) – amerykański wirusolog, laureat Nagrody Nobla w dziedzinie fizjologii i medycyny w 2020 roku[1].

Życiorys

Jest absolwentem wydziału medycyny University of Rochester, zaś praktyki odbył w szpitalu uniwersyteckim University of Washington w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Pracował również na Uniwersytecie Georgetown. Od 1969 jest zatrudniony w amerykańskim Narodowym Instytucie Zdrowia[2].

5 października 2020 został ogłoszony wraz z Michaelem Houghtonem i Charlesem M. Rice’em laureatem Nagrody Nobla w dziedzinie fizjologii lub medycyny „za odkrycie wirusa zapalenia wątroby typu C”[3].

Dr. Alter co-discovered the Australia antigen, a key to detecting hepatitis B virus. In 2000, Dr. Alter was awarded the prestigious Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award and in 2002, he became the first Clinical Center scientist elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and in that same year was elected to the Institute of Medicine. Only a small number of scientists nationally are elected to both these scientific societies.
