Herb papieski

Każdy papież Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego ma swój własny herb, który symbolizuje jego pontyfikat.

Dawny zarys tarczy herbowej (ostatni tego typu herb posiadał Jan Paweł I)
Obecny zarys tarczy herbowej

Pierwszym potwierdzonym historycznie herbem papieskim jest herb Innocentego III (1198–1216)[1]. Herby wszystkich papieży do początku XXI wieku zwieńczone były papieską tiarą. Benedykt XVI zrezygnował z tego heraldycznego zwyczaju, zastępując tiarę mitrą oraz paliuszem[2]. W skład papieskiego herbu tradycyjnie wchodzą złoty i srebrny klucz, reprezentujące siłę łączenia i rozwiązywania na ziemi (srebrny) i w niebie (złoty).

The coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI. The crown with the episcopal miter plate is divided into three fields that carry specific heraldic symbols:
  • Left (heraldic dexter) of the "Moor of Freising" from the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, where Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was Archbishop.
  • Right (heraldic sinister) the bear of St. Corbinian, patron saint of the diocese of Munich and Freising, from the city arms.
  • Below is a scallop, which stands for the pilgrimage. It refers to a legend about St. Augustine. The mussel is also found in the arms of Scots Monastery, Regensburg, in which Benedict XVI. began his career as a priest.
Behind the shield are the Keys of Heaven, which by Christian tradition were received by St. Peter from Jesus as a symbol of Papal authority. On top, it is adorned with a bishop's miter and a pallium instead of the traditional three-tiered papal tiara.

Bartolomeo Passarotti - Pius V.jpg
The aging, enthroned pope turns toward the viewer while making the sign of blessing with his right hand. Pius V (1566-1572) belonged to the Ghislieri family, and on the top of the back of the throne is his family's coat of arms crowned by the papal tiara and the keys of St. Peter, a symbol of the papacy's descent from Christ's apostle. The identifying inscription below is a later addition. Passerotti worked in the mannerist style, which is characterized by strikingly elongated proportions. The pope's bony appearance reveals both his age and the artist's knowledge of human anatomy.
