Herb papieski

W skład papieskiego herbu tradycyjnie wchodzą złoty i srebrny klucz, reprezentujące siłę łączenia i rozwiązywania na ziemi (srebrny) i w niebie (złoty).

The coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI. The crown with the episcopal miter plate is divided into three fields that carry specific heraldic symbols:
- Left (heraldic dexter) of the "Moor of Freising" from the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, where Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was Archbishop.
- Right (heraldic sinister) the bear of St. Corbinian, patron saint of the diocese of Munich and Freising, from the city arms.
- Below is a scallop, which stands for the pilgrimage. It refers to a legend about St. Augustine. The mussel is also found in the arms of Scots Monastery, Regensburg, in which Benedict XVI. began his career as a priest.

Template for papal coats of arms
The aging, enthroned pope turns toward the viewer while making the sign of blessing with his right hand. Pius V (1566-1572) belonged to the Ghislieri family, and on the top of the back of the throne is his family's coat of arms crowned by the papal tiara and the keys of St. Peter, a symbol of the papacy's descent from Christ's apostle. The identifying inscription below is a later addition. Passerotti worked in the mannerist style, which is characterized by strikingly elongated proportions. The pope's bony appearance reveals both his age and the artist's knowledge of human anatomy.
