Igrzyska Wspólnoty Narodów 1978 odbyły się w Edmonton. W imprezie wzięło udział 1405 sportowców z 46 narodowych reprezentacji, z których sześć zadebiutowało. Były to:
Reprezentacja wysp Turks i Caicos liczyła 13 sportowców, jednak żaden z nich nie zdobył medalu. Najwięcej medali w 1978 roku zdobyli reprezentanci Kanady, którzy pierwszy raz w historii zajęli pierwsze miejsce w klasyfikacji medalowej IWB.
W kalendarzu Igrzysk znalazło się dziesięć dyscyplin sportowych: badminton, boks, gimnastyka, kolarstwo, kręglarstwo, lekkoatletyka, nurkowanie, pływanie, podnoszenie ciężarów, strzelectwo i zapasy.
Podczas Igrzysk w Edmonton padły cztery rekordy IWB, które przetrwały do dziś. Australijski kolarz, Phillip Grant Anderson przejechał dystans 117 mili angielskich w rekordowym czasie poniżej 4,5 godziny. Męska reprezentacja Kanady w kolarstwie pobiła rekord IWB w sprincie drużynowym. Alister Allan zdobył 1194 punkty w strzelaniu z odległości 50 metrów, co jest rekordem Igrzysk do chwili obecnej. Poza tym Tracey Lee Wickham z Australii przepłynęła dystans 800 metrów stylem dowolnym w rekordowym czasie 8 minut i 24,62 sekundy.

The Flag of India. The colours are saffron, white and green. The navy blue wheel in the center of the flag has a diameter approximately the width of the white band and is called Ashoka's Dharma Chakra, with 24 spokes (after Ashoka, the Great). Each spoke depicts one hour of the day, portraying the prevalence of righteousness all 24 hours of it.
Flag of Jamaica. “The sunshine, the land is green, and the people are strong and bold” is the symbolism of the colours of the flag. GOLD represents the natural wealth and beauty of sunlight; GREEN represents hope and agricultural resources; BLACK represents the strength and creativity of the people. The original symbolism, however, was "Hardships there are, but the land is green, and the sun shineth", where BLACK represented the hardships being faced.

Ulster Banner is a heraldic banner taken from the former coat of arms of Northern Ireland. It was used by the Northern Ireland government in 1953-1973 with Edwardian crown since coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, based earlier design with Tudor Crown from 1924.
