Kolumna Nelsona (irl.: Colún Nelson) – była to duża kolumna z granitu zwieńczona figurą Horatio Nelsona umiejscowiona pośrodku O’Connell Street w Dublinie. Została zbudowana w latach 1808-1809 i miała wysokość ok. 36,8 m. Kolumna została zniszczona 8 marca 1966 roku o godzinie 1:32 przez bombę podłożoną przez irlandzkich republikanów[1]. W miejscu tym w 2003 został wybudowany monument Spire of Dublin[2].

We've seen shots of Nelson's Pillar before, but usually in the distance or in a state of chassis following its blowing up in March 1966, so I was delighted to find this fine view of it in our Eason Collection.

This photo also gives us a joyous assortment of trams - the no. 8 to Dalkey; the no. 29 to Fairview; the no. 20 to Rialto Bridge; and I think the no. 3 to Westland Row and Ringsend; and a car with reg. no. IK 9729.

There's also an infuriatingly obscured news poster which seems to be screaming about "Startling Evidence"!

From the front page of the Irish Times on Tuesday, 8 March 1966: "The top of Nelson Pillar, in O'Connell street, Dublin, was blown off by a tremendous explosion at 1.32 o'clock this morning and the Nelson statue and tons of rubble poured down into the roadway. By a miracle, nobody was injured, though there were a number of people in the area at the time."
