Zestawienia najwyższych budynków na świecie według różnych kryteriów.
Definicja wieżowca
Wieżowiec to stosunkowo wysoki nadziemny budynek wolno stojący posiadający fundamenty i dach, w którym przynajmniej 50 procent jego wysokości jest wykorzystana na piętra użytkowe. To kryterium odróżnia drapacze chmur od różnego rodzaju wolno stojących wież telewizyjnych (w których piętra użytkowe to jedynie galerie widokowe i restauracje) i kominów (pojęcie piętra tu nie występuje)[1].
Pomiar wysokości budynków
Najwyższe budynki świata (2020).
Do roku 1996 wysokość budynków była mierzona do strukturalnego wierzchołka, czyli do najwyżej położonej integralnej części wieżowca. Do tej wysokości wliczały się iglice, natomiast nie uwzględniano masztów i anten, które można łatwo zdemontować lub podwyższyć. W związku z budową Petronas Towers i sporem o miano najwyższego budynku z Sears Tower, Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat stworzyła kryteria pomiarów wysokości budynków:
1. Wysokość do strukturalnego (architektonicznego) wierzchołka: ta kategoria była jedyną, która istniała do 1996 roku. Uznawana jest za główne kryterium oceny wysokości drapaczy chmur. Wysokość wieżowca mierzona jest do iglicy lub dachu (w przypadku braku iglicy), gdyż wysokość iglicy rzadziej jest zmieniana niż wysokość masztów, anten czy flag na szczytach budynków, które nie są brane pod uwagę w tym zestawieniu[2][3].
2. Wysokość do dachu.
3. Wysokość do najwyższego punktu (wysokość całkowita): do wysokości budynku wliczane są anteny, maszty i inne konstrukcje umieszczane na szczycie wieżowca.
4. Wysokość do najwyżej położonego piętra, które służy nie tylko obsłudze technicznej.

The Shard, taken from the Sky Garden atop the "Walkie-Talkie". A window is open, which allows a crane to lower a box that holds the window cleaners. The people walking at the bottom of this tower are approximately 170 × smaller than the building.
Photographer's notes: The image is stitched from 28 landscape-orientation frames in three columns. The viewpoint is the balcony of the "Sky Garden" at the top of the Walkie-Talkie. This is approximately halfway up the 306m Shard and 750m distant. A Sony A77II camera was used with Sony 55-300mm lens at 160mm. The exposure was f/5.6, 1/1000s and ISO 200. The camera has hand-held and, although the balcony is "outside", the view is behind glass that appears to have a slightly blue tint. These factors necessitated some downsizing of the final stitch to achieve a high quality image.
