50. mistrzostwa świata w łyżwiarstwie szybkim w wieloboju odbyły się w dniach 11–12 lutego 1956 roku w stolicy Norwegii, Oslo. Zawodnicy startowali na naturalnym lodowisku na Bislett Stadion. Łyżwiarze startowali na czterech dystansach: 500 m, 1500 m, 5000 m, 10 000 m. Drugi tytuł mistrzowski wywalczył reprezentant ZSRR Oleg Gonczarienko. O tym, które miejsca zajmowali zawodnicy decydowała mniejsza liczba punktów uzyskana z czterech biegów. Do biegu na 10 000 m awansowała tylko najlepsza 16-tka po trzech dystansach.

W zawodach wzięło udział 44 łyżwiarzy z 14 krajów. Sklasyfikowanych zostało 42.
