Pchnięcie kulą mężczyzn było jedną z konkurencji rozgrywanych podczas XII mistrzostw Europy w Pradze. Kwalifikacje rozegrano 31 sierpnia, a finał 1 września 1978 roku. Zwycięzcą tej konkurencji został reprezentant Niemieckiej Republiki Demokratycznej Udo Beyer. Pierwotnie srebrny medal zdobył Jewgienij Mironow ze Związku Radzieckiego, lecz następnie został zdyskwalifikowany za stosowanie dopingu[1]. Geoff Capes z Wielkiej Brytanii nie został dopuszczony do konkursu finałowego z powodu znieważenia sędziego, a następnie zdyskwalifikowany[2]. W rywalizacji wzięło udział dziewiętnastu zawodników z dwunastu reprezentacji.

ADN-ZB Mittelstädt 01.06.1978-str-Berlin: Europarekord durch Wolfgang Schmidt--Schon zu einem frühen Termin am Saisonbeginn lassen die DDR-Leichtathleten aufhorchen. Nach dem 200-m-Weltrekord und den DDR-Rekorden vom 28.05. sorgte Wolfgang Schmidt (SC Dynamo) bei einem Abendsportfest am 31.05. für eine weitere Bestmarke. Er schleuderte den Diskus auf 68,92 m und verbesserte damit seinen Europarekord um 32 cm.(Foto von einem früheren Wettkampf)
