Nectandra Rol. ex Rottb. – rodzaj rośliny z rodziny wawrzynowatych (Lauraceae Juss.). Według The Plant List w obrębie tego rodzaju znajduje się co najmniej 117 gatunków o nazwach zweryfikowanych i zaakceptowanych, podczas gdy aż 56 taksonów ma status gatunków niepewnych (niezweryfikowanych)[4]. Występuje naturalnie w strefie tropikalnej obu Ameryk[5].

Morfologia

Pokrój
Zimozielone drzewa lub krzewy[6].
Liście
Naprzemianległe, pojedyncze. Liście na brzegu są całobrzegie. Nie mają przylistków[6].
Kwiaty
Są promieniste, obupłciowe, zebrane w wiechy. Rozwijają się w kątach pędów. Mierzą 5–17 cm średnicy. Okwiat pojedynczy składa się z dwóch okółków. Ma białą lub zielonkawą barwę. 9 pręcików ułożonych jest w trzech okółkach. Pylniki są czterokomorowe. Mają 3 małe prątniczki, czasami są nieobecne. Słupek górny, jednokomorowy[6].
Owoce
Pestkowce o mniej lub bardziej czarnej barwie. Mają podłużny kształt, zamknięte w dość płaskim kubku[6].

Zastosowanie

Niektóre gatunki mają twarde i ciężkie drewno, podobne to rodzaju Ocotea. Nasiona gatunku N. pichurim mają zastosowanie jako środek leczniczy[5].

7mm blossoms from a panicle of the Lancewood tree. It's surprising that large trees can have such tiny flowers. The tree is called Lancewood because aboriginal Floridians used the very straight stems as spears. Torchwood is another name, referring to the large amount of oil in the wood making it useful as a light source. The genus has been changed from Ocotea to Nectandra and is a member of the laurel family. These grow to about 12 meters and are fairly common in Florida coastal hammocks, including Munyon Island.
