W finale ustanowili oni nowy rekord Ameryk (7:07,33) i pokonali o 0,13 s Australijczyków, którzy uzyskali czas 7:07,46. Trzecie miejsce z czasem 7:11,83 zajęli reprezentanci Włoch.
