Pierre Joseph van Beneden
Pomnik Benedena w jego rodzinnym Mechelen w Belgii
Pierre Joseph van Beneden (ur. 19 grudnia 1809 w Mechelen, zm. 18 stycznia 1894 w Leuven[1]) – belgijski zoolog i paleontolog. Prowadził badania głównie nad mięczakami, jamochłonami i mszywiołami, a także nad kopalnymi waleniami. Wprowadził pojęcie komensalizmu i mutualizmu. Był profesorem uniwersytetów w Gandawie i Leuven. Jego synem był zoolog Eduard van Beneden.

Statue of the biologist Pierre-Joseph van Beneden at the Pierre-Joseph van Benedenlaan in Mechelen, Belgium (birth place of the figure). The statue was inaugurated at 24 July 1898 (inscription on the back side of the monument). On the front you can read "P.J. VAN BENEDEN 1809-1894". At the sides you can read, in Dutch at the one side and in French on the other "To the world-famous naturalist and professor". At the side of the Dutch inscription you may read "Jul. Lagae" beneath the figure's feet. This is the name of Jules Lagae (1862-1931), the Flemish sculptor and creator of the statue.
