Plymouth GTX I został zaprezentowany po raz pierwszy w 1966 roku.
Samochód trafił na rynek jako muscle car oparty na modelu Belvedere. Od podstawowego Belvedere różnił się przednim grillem oraz tylnym pasem nadwozia, poza tym na masce montowano atrapę wlotu powietrza oraz opcjonalnie malowano na nadwoziu sportowe pasy[1].
Standardowo montowano wzmocnione zawieszenie[2]. W standardzie oferowano również silnik 440 CID V8 nazywany "Super Commando 440". Moc silnika szacowano na 375 hp. W roku 1967 za dodatkowe 546 dolarów amerykańskich nabywca mógł zamiast 440 zamontować pochodzący od Chryslera motor 426 CID HEMI.

Plymouth GTX II został zaprezentowany po raz pierwszy w 1967 roku.
Wzorem pokrewnych modeli Belvedere i Satellite, druga generacja Plymoutha GTX zyskała masywniejsze nadwozie z wyraźnie zarysowanymi krawędziami nadkoli, szeroko rozstawionymi podwójnymi reflektorami w prostokątnych kloszach oraz wyraźnymi przetłoczeniami na panelach bocznych[3].
Tylna część nadwozia miała podłużny bagażnik, z kolei nadwozie zyskało podwójne malowanie. Wyczynowy charakter GTX-a podkreślało wysokoprofilowe, sportowe ogumienie, a także dodatkowe wloty powietrza na masce[4].

Plymouth GTX III został zaprezentowany po raz pierwszy w 1970 roku.
Trzecia i zarazem ostatnia generacja Plymoutha GTX powstała jako konstrukcja bardziej autonomiczna w stosunku do innych osobowych modeli producenta. Nadwozie zyskało smuklejsze, masywniejsze proporcje z nisko poprowadzoną linią dachu. Podłużna maska zakończona została szerokim, zaokrąglonym wlotem powietrza. Pas przedni ponownie zdobiły podwójne, okrągłe reflektory[5][6].
Po niespełna roku produkcji, Plymouth GTX trzeciej generacji został wycofany ze sprzedaży bez prezentacji bezpośredniego następcy.

Buffed Silver. From 1965 the B body Plymouths (same platform as the Dodge Coronet and Charger) were available in base model Belvedere and upmarket Satellite. Roadrunners were introduced in 1968, a high performance version of the Belvedere The Plymouth GTX was introduced in 1967 to be a gentleman's muscle car, it was a blend of style and performance. The GTX got the Satellite trim, whereas the Roadrunner got the Belvederes. It got mock hood scoops, optional racing stripes and heavy duty suspension. Available in Hardtop or Convertible.

Buffed Silver. The Plymouth was introduced in 1928, Chryslers lowest priced car. From 1965, three size cars were available; The compact A body Valiant and Barracuda. The Intermediate B body Belvedere and Satellite (same platform as the Dodge Coronet and Charger) And the full size C body Fury I, II and III. For 1968, the B body cars were restyled with a roofline changed to follow the Dodge Charger. Available was; The base Belvedere (2 door Coupe, 4 door Sedan and Wagon). The upmarket Satellite with bucket seats and a console (2 door Hardtop, Convertible, 4 door Sedan and Wagon). The GTX was introduced in 1967 to be a gentleman's muscle car, it was a blend of style and performance. (2 door Hardtop or Convertible) Standard 440, optional 426. The Road Runner was introduced in 1968, a cheaper high performance option with mock hood scoops, optional racing stripes and heavy duty suspension (2 door Coupe or 2 door Hardtop) Standard 383, optional 426. The GTX got the Satellite trim, whereas the Roadrunner got the Belvederes.
