Uroczystości pogrzebowe Benedykta XVI w Watykanie

Emerytowany papież Benedykt XVI zmarł w Watykanie 31 grudnia 2022 roku w wieku 95 lat. Uroczystości pogrzebowe z udziałem jego następcy – Franciszka odbyły się 5 stycznia 2023 roku.

W uroczystości brali udział przywódcy polityczni (m.in. prezydent Niemiec Frank-Walter Steinmeier, prezydent Włoch Sergio Mattarella i prezydent Litwy Gitanas Nauseda) przedstawiciele innych religii[1]. Uroczystości zgromadziły kilkadziesiąt tysięcy osób obecnych na placu Świętego Piotra. Trumna z ciałem zmarłego papieża została złożona w Grotach Watykańskich[2][3].

The coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI. The crown with the episcopal miter plate is divided into three fields that carry specific heraldic symbols:
  • Left (heraldic dexter) of the "Moor of Freising" from the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, where Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was Archbishop.
  • Right (heraldic sinister) the bear of St. Corbinian, patron saint of the diocese of Munich and Freising, from the city arms.
  • Below is a scallop, which stands for the pilgrimage. It refers to a legend about St. Augustine. The mussel is also found in the arms of Scots Monastery, Regensburg, in which Benedict XVI. began his career as a priest.
Behind the shield are the Keys of Heaven, which by Christian tradition were received by St. Peter from Jesus as a symbol of Papal authority. On top, it is adorned with a bishop's miter and a pallium instead of the traditional three-tiered papal tiara.
