Portugalia wystartowała po raz pierwszy na letnich IO w 1912 roku na igrzyskach w Sztokholmie i od tamtej pory wystartowała na wszystkich letnich igrzyskach. Najwięcej medali (3) zdobyła na igrzyskach w Los Angeles oraz na igrzyskach w Atenach[1].
