Pierwsza edycja Pucharu Narodów Afryki odbyła się w dniach 10–16 lutego 1957 roku, w sudańskim Chartumie. Do rozgrywek początkowo zgłosiły się cztery zespoły, jednak reprezentacja RPA została zdyskwalifikowana z powodu apartheidu. Grano systemem pucharowym.
