Västra Götalands län utworzono 1 stycznia 1998 r. po złączeniu dotychczasowych regionów administracyjnych Älvsborg, Göteborg i Bohus (Göteborgs och Bohus län) oraz większej części Skaraborg, poza gminami Mullsjö i Habo, które zostały wówczas przyłączone do regionu administracyjnego Jönköping.
