DR Class "44" 2-10-0 No.44 1486 (ex-DRG 44 1486) at the Meingen Steam Festival, 09/12. The DRG built 10 in 1927 and the DRB built 1,979 more in 1939-49. West Germany (DB) received 1,242, East Germany (DR) 335, Poland (PKP - Class Ty4) 67, Czechoslavakia (CSD) 3, Austria (OBB) 11 and France (SNCF - Class 150X) 15. In 1958, DB converted 32 to oil burners (Class "043"), the coal burners becoming Class "044". In 1963 the DR converted 91 to oil burning and 20 to burn coal dust (without reclassification). In 1973 DR converted all its oil burners back to coal firing. The last DB Class "044" and "043" were withdrawn in 1977, the lattr hauling the last DB steam train.
