Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, 26 October 1942: the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) listing after the final Japanese attack. Following a third torpedo hit starboard, the inclinometer read 26 degrees and she was abandoned at this point. The heavy cruiser USS Northampton (CA-26) is visible behind Hornet. The photo was taken from USS Pensacola (CA-24).
