Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara) (Older synonym: Lacerta vivipara. Also known as Viviparous Lizard.)

I noticed this lizard (whose patterning suggests that it is a female) sitting on a rock while I was walking along the adjacent footpath. I maintained as much distance from it as the path allowed, so as not to disturb it unduly; it scurried away after I had passed.

This species is protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
