The arms were ordered by the club devoted to the maintenance of local traditions and characteristics and were designed by Lothar Müller-Westphal, a well known heraldist. They are derived from a seal of the knight Johann (von Löwenburg gen.) von Merheim. The chequy shield is derived from the arms of the lords of Sponheim; the label is the sign of the younger line of the lords.
