Funerary lebes-kalpe. Pentelic marble. Found at the end of Acharnon Street, Athens. On a column-base surrounded by acanthus leaves and palmettes stands a lebes-kalpe (vessel used as a cinerary urn) with relief decoration of a guilloche and fluting; the shoulder is surmounted by busts and griffins, symbols of immortality. The lavish floral decoration on the base of the monument, which will have adorned the imposing grave enclosure of an important Athenian family, recalls the beauty of the Islands of the Blessed.
