Sketch map of Hobbit origins, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's Prologue 'Concerning Hobbits' at the start of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien explains that the Harfoots "long lived in the foothills of the mountains" and "moved westward early", roaming as far as Weathertop; the Stoors "lingered long by the banks of the Great River Anduin" and followed the river Loudwater southwards; and the Fallowhides "were a northerly branch", were friendly with the Elves, "crossed the mountains north of Rivendell and came down the River Hoarwell".
