Street gate is front gate of Siheyuan yard. In ancient China, families in different social classes used to live in Siheyuan yards and buildings with different sizes and architecture styles. There were strict conventions governing this. The street gate in this picture belonged to a middle class urban family. With light blue tiles, grey walls, green plants and a red gate, this image is typical of a hutong of Old Beijing in summer.
