Karl von Roques (1880-1949), full name "Karl Jerome Christian Georg Kurt von Roques", thus the non-matching first name on the name plate. Karl von Roques was a German general during World War II, commanding the rear forces behind Army Group South from the beginning of Operation Barbarossa through October 1941. (German designation: Befehlshaber des Rückwärtigen Heeresgebietes, Heeresgruppe Süd) As such, he bore responsibility for numerous war crimes such as the shooting of Jews, prisoners of war deemed to fall under the Commissar Order, and hostages.
This photograph of Karl von Roques was taken by US Army photographers on behalf of the Office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes (OCCWC) during Nuremberg Trial XII (High Command Trial / OKW-Prozess), in which he was accused and indicted, see High Command Trial.
