La Chapelle-sous-Brancion, Cities and villages in Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy

The first mention of a church on this site was in 964 as part of the Cluny charter. This Romanesque church (dedicated to St. Peter) was built in the 12th. century. It was declared an historic monument in the first major listings undertaken by the French government in 1863. It escaped the heavy handed early restorations such as found at Carcassonne because the church was already in good condition, having been in more or less continuous use, and because it was small enough and remote enough to escape the destructions of the revolutionary period.

This is another of those serene and magical French buildings that is too 'minor' to have its spiritual essence destroyed by excessive visiting and the car parks that go with it.
