Opis:
A Southern Pacific Railroad bridge, now part of the Iron Horse Regional Trail in Contra Costa County, California.
  • This crosses a channelized Walnut Creek at the Concord-Pleasant Hill boundary immediately south of Monument Boulevard, altered by blurring the background for clarity and image compression. This is a single track railroad bridge now used for pipeline support and to carry a 'rail trail' pedestrian and bicycle path.
  • The two outer vertical elements are in tension. The central vertical element carries no significant load but stabilizes the upper horizontal chord, which is under compression. The outer vertical elements are in tension and support the deck. The outer diagonal elements are also in compression while the inner diagonals are in tension. Often, Lower chord horizontal elements are in tension, shear, and bending however in this case, the roadbed is supported on a beam structure that runs under the rail tracks, which is in turn supported by the truss at three crossbeams secured at the node points and the abutments. Thus the truss lower chords are in pure tension. Some trusses do not use vertical elements, using greater resistance to bending in the horizontal elements to compensate. One form of truss uses a large number of diagonal elements to form a lattice-like structure. A truss like this may be designed with the roadbed and footings on the top chord and the other elements below. In that case the vertical element purposes are changed from deck support to chord support and their loadings thus change.
