Savannah Sparrow, Passerculus sandwichensis, hatchling sleeping next to his still un-hatched siblings. Note one egg is cracking as the baby bird inside begins breaking free. Newly hatched Savannah Sparrows have orange skin very little down covering it.

NOTE: This nest was photographed as part of a nest monitoring project in the oil fields of Alberta, Canada by a professional trained in viewing sensitive nests and minimizing the disturbance to the birds and the surrounding vegetation.

Photographing nests simply to "snap a cute pic" can expose them to predators and disrupt the feeding and care of nestlings!
