Opis:

Surrendered German submarine U 776; surrendered in May, 1945. See AI01285-6 Her visit was Friday 17th to Tuesday 21st August 1945. Collecting board for St George's Fund for Sailors is key identifier. 3270 folk trooped over her during her 3 days of public viewing, only slightly behind the Kirkwall total which was the tour record. (Shetland Times 24/08/1945 and preceding weeks). A type VIIC submarine. Seemingly single 37mm on lower level and only one of the normal two pairs of 2cm on upper level.

Her British captain was L/com. Peter Marriott, ex-skipper of submarine H.M.S. Graph on operations off Norway, based Lerwick. Initial post-war tour of captured submarines to U.K public had included Kirkwalll and Oban but not Stornoway or Lerwick. Zetland County Council lobbied Admiralty to ensure visit included Lerwick.
