herefore in the chapter on Liberal Arts will be found the descrip-tion of all such exhibits as pianos and other musical instruments,and literature and other material things pertaining to music. Butin this chapter it is desired to make plain the scope of the musicalinterests as represented in the actual rendering and production ofmusic, vocal and instrumental, within the Exposition itself. Thereis then ample material to engage attention. First as to the e^eat auditoriums which house the musical featuresof the Fair. At this point, just to the south ofthe Manufactures Building, there is an inlet from Lake Michigan CHORAL AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. 407 into the inner Lagoon, byway of the Great Basin. Onthe north side of this inlet, atthe edge of the water, standsthe temple of Music On thesouth is the Casino, the centreof the system of Public Com-fort, and connecting them,bridging the inflowing waters,extends the Peristyle, a com-manding array of monolithicpillars, supporting a greatroof, a magnificent arch, andthe Columbus Quadriga, oneof the most worthy of all thepieces of sculpture on theofrounds.
