Opis:
This throne intended for the Senate is based on a marble seat from the Roman period called « the throne of a priestess of Ceres », which arrived in France in 1796. David found the piece very beautiful and made a lovely sketch of it. The seat is adorned with gold-thread embroidery featuring a bee, the imperial emblem, and the emperor's monogram on the backrest. The elbow-rests depict a pair of winged sphinxes. A canopy supported by six gilt plaster Victories surmonted the chair. It comes from the Throne Gallery built in the Luxembourg Palace during Napoleon III's reign. Today, it is in the Senate conference room.
